Be part of the adventure and contribute to the development of solar energy in Cabo Verde

  • In 2022, on the sun-drenched island of Santiago in Cabo Verde, three childhood friends—Elisângela, Rui, and Mateus—decided to turn their concern for the environment into action. With backgrounds in engineering, business, and environmental science, they shared one vision: to bring clean, affordable energy to even the most remote parts of their archipelago.

They founded Open Solar, a solar energy startup named after morabeza, the Creole word capturing Cabo Verde’s warmth and hospitality.

Starting from a modest office in Praia, they began installing solar panels on rooftops in rural villages, where diesel generators were unreliable and expensive. Their first major project brought 24/7 electricity to the village of Chã das Caldeiras, where students had never studied under electric lights before.

But Open Solar didn’t stop there. They developed portable solar kits for fishing communities, allowing fishermen to refrigerate their catch and reduce waste. They built solar-powered water pumps for agriculture in São Nicolau. And with the help of a small EU grant, they launched a training program for local youth to become certified solar technicians.

By 2025, Open Solar had grown to a 30-person team and expanded to four islands. Their impact was measurable: lower energy costs, fewer blackouts, reduced carbon emissions, and a new generation inspired by green technology.

    Their motto?
“Powered by the sun, driven by community.”

Today, Open Solar is not just a company—it’s a movement, proving that small islands can lead big climate solutions.
